700 More MBBS & MD/MS Seats to Be Added in Uttar Pradesh
Central Government’s Approval for Medical Seat Expansion
The Central Government has approved the third phase of strengthening medical colleges, postgraduate institutes, and government hospitals. With this, Uttar Pradesh will soon get 700 additional medical seats — around 500 MBBS seats and 200 MD/MS seats.
Financial Assistance for New Medical Seats
For every newly created seat, the Central Government will provide ₹1.5 crore in financial assistance. This step aims to improve medical infrastructure, faculty strength, and hospital facilities across the state.
Current Medical Seats in Uttar Pradesh (2025)
At present, Uttar Pradesh has:
- 92 government and private medical colleges
- 13,225 MBBS seats
- 3,971 MD/MS seats
- Total: 17,196 medical seats
Updated Seat Count After Expansion
After the new approval, the total medical seats in UP will increase to 17,896.
- MBBS seats: From 13,225 to 13,725
- MD/MS seats: From 3,971 to 4,171
This means 17,896 doctors will be trained every year from medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh.

- UG (MBBS) admissions are currently ongoing for 13,225 seats. With the increase, more students will secure government and private MBBS admissions.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) decides the eligibility for seat expansion.
For seats to increase in any medical college, the institution must meet the required number of hospital beds and qualified faculty members as per NMC norms.
